The illustrations are very literal, perfectly matching the text any word that appears on a page is represented with an image. All of the other pages follow this depiction in a similar manner. This contrasts the ideas of old and new in a simple way for children. The children are climbing on a large, fully grown tree, while the old man is sitting with a new tree that has yet to be planted. On this page the image depicts an old man and young children. The illustrations paired with the descriptive words allow for an easy understanding for children while still conveying the larger conceptual message. The descriptive words are known and relatable to all children and connect to the deeper theme about the world. The book follows an AA BB rhyme scheme, and when read aloud sounds much like a poem. The pages alternate from descriptive words about particular situations to a more general theme about the world… From morning to night, the beach to the garden, and sun to rain, this book highlights the importance and value of everything the world has to offer. ![]() ![]() This story depicts the daily lives of individuals from the same community. There’s a mystery about Spindrift House that needs to be solved and the Answer Squad (this book’s Mystery Incorporated equivalent, minus Scooby-Doo and Scooby Snacks) are certain they’re up for the task. It was built some time in the 1800’s and while local legends disagree on many of the details, everyone agrees it was built by someone who wasn’t a local, someone who died soon afterwards by falling from its widow’s walk. On a hillside in Port Mercy, Maine, “A Healthy Place for Families”, you will find Spindrift House. Spindrift House has had a great deal of time to decide what it wants to be, and what it wants to be is unforgiving. Having said that, this is the first Seanan/Mira book I’ve read where I didn’t fall in love at first page and I feel like I’ve somehow failed as a reader. I may have already been sold by the fact that my all time favourite author wrote it but even if I hadn’t, that illustration would have clinched the deal. It’s so delightfully ominous and between the house that should be mine and the promise of tentacled creepiness I was sold. ![]() ![]() I fell in love with Julie Dillon’s cover illustration at first sight. ![]() ![]() ![]() Henry Roth is a man afraid of commitment until he meets the beautiful Lucy. The main story begins nine years later, when the sight of a spot of her own blood on the sheets of a bed she’s making wakes Rose up to the fourteen years of abuse that has made up her marriage. The story begins with one of the most truly horrific scenes King has ever written, 23 year old Rose Daniels suffering a miscarriage after being brutally beaten by her husband Norman. Of course as anyone will gather who’s read these reviews, the opinion of the wonderful lady I’m married to holds considerable weight with me and as she falls firmly into the “loved it” camp I had to give it a go myself. King himself apparently thought of it as one of his worst books. ![]() Many regard it simply with that dismissive middle of the road “meh it was okay” which is almost more damning than if they’d hated it. Whereas some of Stephen King’s works like The Stand, It and Under the Dome seem to have earned if not quite universal, at least intergalactic acclaim, opinion seems oddly polarised about Rose Madder. ![]() ![]() ![]() (mm) (14) 00-mm (6) 1.2-finished-reading (5) alien (11) aliens (35) bdsm (21) book-ebook (6) book-free (5) book-novel-50k-to-100k-words (6) book-series (8) bought 2020 (5) ebook (8) favorite-collections-series (5) favorite-couples (6) favorites (12) fiction (6) g-sci-fi (7) gay-sci-fi (14) genre-sci-fi (8) kink (6) lgb (5) lgbt (12) lgbtqa (5) m-m-sff (5) m/m (33) m/m genre (6) m/m romance (14) main-location-other-world (8) military (6) Not Big 5 (6) own-ebook (5) p-market-sales-trader (5) p-military (6) Publisher: Loose ID (6) r-favourites (5) read (15) read 2020 (8) read in 2020 (6) relation-ds (7) romance (38) science fiction (82) series (9) Series: Rownt (5) sexcontent-dominance-submission (5) source-library (5) species-aliens (8) species-spacemen-aliens (8) theme-interspecies (6) time-futuristic (7) to-read (34) Top Members ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() She was also a panelist on the New Zealand version of the television advice show Beauty and the Beast, hosted by Selwyn Toogood. Warsan has read her work internationally, including recent readings in South Africa, Italy and Germany, and her poetry has been translated into Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. ![]() Born in 1988, she is an artist and activist who uses her work to document narratives of journey and trauma. Warsan Shire is a Kenyan-born Somali poet and writer who is based in London. As Rumi said, “Love will find its way through all languages on its own” in ‘teaching my mother how to give birth’, Warsan’s début pamphlet, we witness the unearthing of a poet who finds her way through all preconceptions to strike the heart directly. What elevates teaching my mother how to give birth, what gives the poems their disturbing brilliance, is Warsan Shire’s ability to give simple, beautiful eloquence to the veiled world where sensuality lives in the dominant narrative of Islam reclaiming the more nuanced truths of earlier times – as in Tayeb Salih’s work – and translating to the realm of lyric the work of the likes of Nawal El Saadawi. ![]() |
